Design
In April 2010, Santa Monica City Council awarded a contract to James Corner Field Operations and its team of experts to design two parks for the Santa Monica Civic Center.
At the conclusion of an intensive community participation process with input from neighborhood groups and City commissions, on October 25, 2011, design development plans for both parks and the associated streetscapes were approved by City Council. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2012 and the park it set to open by the end of 2013.

Artist Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle will create an iconic sculpture comprised of 49 telescoping stainless steel poles each affixed at the top with anemometers and wind vanes, staggered in height in increments of one foot. Viewable from many vantage points in the park, the elegant, grid-like form and quiet kinetic aspect of "Weather Field No. 1" complements the innovative design of the park both physically and conceptually by highlighting the topography of the park and acknowledging the local environment.
